Berkley Community Theater 1986

A controversial a run, due mainly to the Brent Mydland’ “meltdown” on the 21st, and some erratic playing and singing through the four shows . Some feel Garcia is showing signs of wearing down . In general I think the were better shows than the ones a Irvine,(with 4/19 being really good ) maybe more in line with the batting avarage of the earlier East Coast shows .

4/18
A good “West LA”, that has a slightly smokey feel . One of the few Grateful Dead visits into Elvis country , “My Baby Left Me / That’s Alright Mama” are rough run throughs . For “My Baby Left Me”, check out Elvis’s own ,or the the very good cover by Creedence (on Cosmo’s Factory) . “ Fo r That’s Alright Mama” the seminal Elvis Sun sessions recording . And Garcia did it on his own, of course . Both songs have their origin with Arthur Crudup (1946, and 1950) . Now I liked the Shakedown that opens set two . Some hear problems . There is a nice jam after “He’s Gone “ . The “Space>Wheel>Smokestack>Stella” is interesting . Odd place for a Weir blues venture, and it is a strong version, and I’m not a big “Bob does Howlin'’ Wolf “ fan .! The rest of the show is ok, nothing really stinky .
These recent Miller AUDs for this run, sound good to me . Plays down Brent’s needles to ears tweaked electric piano high end, for one thing . The 24bit ones have just a bit more air to them, but I still like these new ones .

This is my pick of the litter . Short show, but that’s ok . Starts off with a “Stranger” that seems cut of the same cloth as the previous night’s “Shakedown” . Mostly avarage first set, gets better at the end with an interesting combo of “Cassidy>Big RR Blues, Sat. Night” . Set two for 1986, is wonderful . A space jammy set,: “Crazy Fingers>Playing (23 minutes).>drums>space.>Ohter One>China Doll.Playing Reprise.Sugar Mag.. Mighty Quinn” . No nonsense . It helps that Bob brings some of his best songs for the night .
Sure wish I saw this one !

Here is the infamous “Brent goes crazy” show . He stays out with the drummers, playing away then goes into a drunken, tortured version of his “Maybe You Know” . For some this ruins the show, for others it is real life theater . Well it is interesting departure from the usual drums/space section, that's for sure .
But what about the rest of the show ? Up, and down . There is some good playing, and some really flubbed junk playing (Brent, as one might guess, it eratic ) I found the first set pleasant, but uninspired . They do step it up for “Let It Grow” . The “Touch of Grey’, tossed off, “Estimated”does have less Bobby screaming than some of the previous ones from this year . Another super fast “Eyes” . After Bren’t soul barring, The band goes into “GDTRFB”, and everything sounds fine for a 80’s version . Garcia must have felt they needed even more saving, and pulls out the second of two 1986 “Morning Dew”s . The rest of the show is ok .

Brent is still having problems, in his playing and, singing , but there is some good stuff here .
The show opens well with “Box Rain>Visions of Johanna” . I belive this is the last “Visions” till 95 .
It is an odd placement for a song of such eminence , but hem Dylan himself has it stuck in the middle of side one on “Blonde on Blonde “ . I wish Jerry would have played it more often . As always , “Bird Song” is a highlight, but count me as one who does not like the bird effects that Healy or some one added . Like the Irvine, account, the ‘China>Rider” is well done, except for some lame playing from Mydland . “Terrapin” , is just alright, but at least you get the whole song , unlike the previous one at Irvine . A bit like 4/18, the post drums set list is a little unusual .”Spoonful> Throwing Stones > Black Peter> Lovelight” . For me it is the reverse of 4/19, Bob brings some of my least favorite songs here “LLR”, “Throwing Stones”, and his take on “Lovelight” .
Another advantage of the AUDs is that Bret’ is less exposed .The whole blends better .

So this run was a mixed bag , to be sure .
Highlights ;
4/18 - “West La”,”Shakedown” and the Space>Wheel>Smokestack>Stella” sequence .
4/19 - The whole second set . Maybe not perfect , but really enjoyable, and no cringe moments .
4/21 - “Let it Grow” , “Morning Dew”, and for the sad oddity of it all, Brent’s jam with the drumers> “Baby You Know” .
4/22 - “Box>Johanna”, “Bird Song” ‘China.Rider” .

That's it for the first third of 86 .

Dudley, I was at the 4-21 Brent show. I lived down the street on Derby so I walked over. I have a different take on that show

Thanks for your analysis of these shows

Like your take. It must have been a trip to see them there. Looked like every hs aud. ever made when I was in it in 1970. The Band of Gypsys and friend. But what was more important was Arinell Pizza on Shattuck. That was near you too. :)

Actually I was going to mention your post, as I found it when looking around fo this . I'm middle ground on the meltdown . Getting only 1/2 a "Terrapin" at Irvine after a dumbed down "LLR" , and no "Morning Dew" to compensate was worse .
For my taste, that second set on the 19th puts it at the top of the list of the show I listened to for this . I like it more than some of the more pro shows in the late Brent period .
